Our
Holiday 2006/2007 vacation was a road trip, destination:
Sun City West, Arizona
for Christmas with the Rinders
and Albuquerque, New Mexico
for New Year's with the Lundys. We
nicknamed it the "what else can
happen?" trip. |
|
|
Friday, December 22nd: Set out at
5:00 in the morning, and reached
Weatherford, Oklahoma
that
night. |
 |
|
Saturday, December 23rd: Continued onto Gallup, New Mexico. |
 |
|
Sunday, December 24th: Continued
onto Sun City West, Arizona,
home of Rachel's parents, Ron & Linda Rinder. Also in town
were Rachel's sister (Vicki) and her family Josh, Ryan, Corinne, and
unborn baby Fisher. |
 |
|
Monday, December 25th: We spent
Christmas
day with Rachel's family. Presents and wrappings and
batteries, oh my! |
 |
|
Tuesday, December 26th: We
followed Rachel's family out to San Diego, where we visited the
San Diego Zoo. We
spent the night in
Oceanside, California. |
 |
|
Wednesday, December 27th:
Something the kids have wanted to do for a very long time, we visited
Legoland California
today. Yes, they have an amusement park and yes, it's made
partially of legos. It was a lot of fun, but it sure was windy
and chilly that day. |
 |
|
Thursday, December 28th: We
were planning on visiting Disneyland this day, but decided to cut
the vacation short. And as you will see later on, this turned
out to be a fantastic idea. We drove all the way to
Albuquerque, New Mexico to stay
at chez Lundy. We almost didn't make it; the snow was coming
down like crazy. |
 |
|
Friday, December 29th: Spent
the day visiting with Ken's parents, Ken & Dorothy Lundy. They
had wanted to show us the Albuquerque sights, and particularly their
new plot (they're having a
new
home built), but the snow was coming down all day long and the
roads were impassable. So, we stayed in and enjoyed each
other's company. |
 |
|
Saturday, December 30th: Had
planned on heading home today. But all of the interstates
leading out of Albuquerque were closed. Yes, ALL of them.
They didn't get much plowing done over the night hours and it was
still snowing during the day. After all was said and done,
Albuquerque got 8-10 inches. Yes, I know, this is New Mexico
we're talking about. But being New Mexico, they aren't
prepared for that much snowfall, so like I said, all of the
interstates were closed. |
 |
|
Sunday, December 31st: OK, now we
really planned on heading out today. But once again, all of
the interstates were closed. The snow had finally stopped
falling, but do you think the roads were plowed and open for travel?
NOPE! We thanked our lucky stars we decided to leave
California when we did and finally admitted to ourselves we weren't
getting home in time for work and school on the 2nd. Would
work believe that we were snowed-in (in New Mexico)? |
 |
|
Monday, January 1st: Finally
set out this morning. Interstate 40 was finally opened, but it
was crawling with Semis not going faster that maybe 5 mph. So,
we turned around and headed north on Interstate 25 towards Denver.
It too had just opened that morning, and it was clear sailing the
whole way. We didn't stop until we reached
North Platte, Nebraska.
Along the way, we saw quite a bit of damage from an ice storm that
must have passed through on Interstate 70 just days before. It
was quite the site (including all of the overturned Semis in the
ditch). |
 |
|
Tuesday, January 2nd: Destination:
home. Finally. |
